The first inflow of methane gas was obtained during exploratory drilling of the Karaganda coal basin

Astana                                                                                                         September 3, 2015 The first inflow of methane gas was obtained during exploratory drilling of the Karaganda coal basin

“KazTransGas” has started implementation of the first stage of exploration of coal bed methane in Karaganda coal basin, under which the exploration work carried out with the use of research and development aimed at studying the gas content of this area and the development of optimal technologies of methane extraction in coal seams in the Karaganda coal basin.

To date, the development of the first drilled well is underway, where the first gas inflow was obtained during the intensification of the flow rate. In total, it is planned to drill 7 wells: 3 geological for core sampling and 4 pilot wells, for which drilling has already begun. In the process of drilling, various methods of intensification and drilling are used, including for the first time in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan – pneumatic shock drilling up to 600 meters, to obtain more representative geological information on the structure of productive coal seams.

Core testing will be conducted in certified international laboratories of the USA, China and Poland leading in this field of services, with which the relevant contracts have already been concluded.

All the exploration works are carried out in accordance with “Project of prospecting works on coal bed methane of coal Sherubaynurinskiy district of Karaganda coal basin”. According to the well-known expert in the industry, Professor of Karaganda state technical University Nikolai Drizhd, in the process of drilling, sufficiently high gas content of coal seams were obtained, which once again testifies to the prospects of the work carried out. According to him, “KazTransGas conducts unique tests that will allow the expansion of pilot works to perform a major state task-to obtain industrial gas, which is extremely necessary for solving energy problems not only in Karaganda region, but also in Astana, and to have a fundamental impact on the further development of the social sphere and the solution of environmental problems.”

Completion of works on the 1st stage is planned in 2016, according to the results of which will be developed a feasibility study of the prospects for the development of this direction of gas production, as well as the calculation of methane reserves of coal seams of the Contract area with the statement on the state balance of minerals of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

REFERENCE: The project is implemented according to the action plan (roadmap) for the implementation of personal orders of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on exploration and production of methane from Karaganda coal basin, approved 14.03.2014, For exploration JSC “KazTransGas” has considered several sites in the Karaganda coal basin. According to the results of the analysis, the most studied Sherubaynurinskiy area was chosen. According to various estimates, the Karaganda basin at a depth of 1800 m contains from 1.0 trillion.m3 to 4.0 trillion.m3 of gas.

JSC “KazTransGas” continues to study the world experience of coal bed methane production (hereinafter-CBM). In February this year, the company’s employees visited the production facilities of LLC Gazprom Dobycha Kuznetsk (a subsidiary of PC Gazprom). As a result, a Memorandum of cooperation was signed, which defined the General principles of interaction between the participants. They also visited the production facilities of companies in India and China, successfully implementing projects in the field of CBM production.

At the same time, JSC “KazTransGas” together with the Ministry of energy and the Association “KazEnergy” initiates legislative measures aimed at supporting projects for exploration and production of CBM. This direction is innovative in the field of hydrocarbon production, and is one of the unconventional energy carriers, the forecast reserves of which allow us to consider it as an alternative component of the fuel and energy base of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The study of this issue is important and will further contribute as one of the alternative options for gasification of the Central and Northern regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

JSC “KazTransGas” is the national operator of Kazakhstan in the field of gas and gas supply. The group of JSC “KazTransGas” includes producing, transporting and selling gas and products of its processing enterprises and organizations.
